Giving Your Rabbits a Home They Deserve: How to Choose the Right Hutch

Giving Your Rabbits a Home They Deserve

Rabbits are social, curious animals that need more space than most people expect. A rabbit kept in a hutch that's too small will develop behavioral problems and health issues. Get the setup right from the start and you'll have happy, healthy rabbits for years.

How Big Does a Rabbit Hutch Need to Be?

The minimum size for a single rabbit is a hutch that allows them to take at least three full hops and stand up on their hind legs without their ears touching the roof. In practical terms, that's at least 6 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet tall for a medium-sized breed. Bigger is always better.

For two rabbits — and rabbits do better in pairs — add at least 50% more space. Many hutch designs now include a lower enclosed sleeping area connected to an open wire run, which gives rabbits the best of both worlds.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Hutches

Outdoor hutches work well in mild climates but need protection from temperature extremes, predators, and wind. Position the hutch out of direct afternoon sun, against a wall or fence if possible, and off the ground to protect from moisture and rats. A waterproof cover over the hutch during rain keeps bedding dry.

What Goes Inside the Hutch

Good bedding is essential. Paper-based bedding, hay, or fleece liners are all suitable options. Fresh hay should always be available as it makes up the bulk of a rabbit's diet and keeps their digestive system working correctly. Add a hidey box where your rabbit can retreat when they want privacy. Water should be provided fresh daily via a sipper bottle or heavy ceramic bowl.

Cleaning Routine

Spot clean daily, removing droppings and wet bedding. Do a full clean weekly — remove all bedding, wipe down surfaces with a pet-safe cleaner, and replace with fresh material. Rabbits are naturally clean animals and a dirty hutch leads to sore hocks and respiratory problems.

Letting Them Out

Rabbits need several hours of exercise outside the hutch every day. A secure exercise run attached to the hutch is ideal. Browse our full range of rabbit hutches and runs, sized for single rabbits through to large multi-rabbit setups.
